Common Prompting Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Most weak AI answers come from unclear requests. Better prompts usually need a clearer goal, useful context, and a specific output format.

Prompting mistakes and fixes

Mistake 1: vague goals

A prompt like "help me with this" gives the assistant too little direction. Replace it with the exact outcome you want: a summary, email, checklist, comparison, decision, or draft.

Mistake 2: missing context

Context tells the assistant what matters. Add the audience, situation, source material, and any background that changes the answer. Keep it relevant rather than long.

Mistake 3: no constraints

Without constraints, the assistant has to guess the length, tone, scope, and level of detail. Add limits such as word count, reading level, source rules, and things to avoid.

Mistake 4: unclear format

If you need a table, checklist, JSON object, email, or short bullet list, ask for it directly. Output format is one of the easiest ways to improve usefulness.

Mistake 5: no iteration

The first answer is often a starting point. Give specific feedback such as "make it shorter," "add risks," "use a calmer tone," or "turn this into steps."
